Someone asked why the Australia government didn't just settle the refugees in Australia, instead of seeking a deal to settle them in the US.
Maybe it was because there was a feeling that:
1. Settling boat-people in Australia has been proven to encourage more arrivals by boat
2. Traveling by boat has been proven to put more lives at risk - many have drowned
3. It financially rewards foreign people-smugglers
4. It's unfair on refugees who have applied for asylum through the right channels, it's queue-jumping
5. Infiltration by terrorists is a proven risk
6. Australia already has one of the highest intakes of refugees in the world proportionately
7. The example of Europe's open borders policy is looking threatening
