"Pain is also a disease" - I heard this on an NHK TV program tonight.
Although the program was mainly about palliative care of cancer patients, I thought the above statement might also be an interesting approach to other kinds of 'pain' such as psychosomatic pain, fibromyalgic pain, phantom pain (such as that imagined to exist in an amputated limb) and pain such as can be alleviated through treatment with antidepressants.
