Two things we know about the kinds of singing Paul wanted
done in the churches:
One, it was to express or at least affirm the message of
Christ, not merely the word of the Old Covenant Law and Prophets:
"...Let the WORD OF CHRIST
dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in
psalms and hymns and spiritual songs...."
Two, the songs were to be sung with the Gospel of grace in
their hearts - not merely with concepts of the Law before their eyes:
